Gallery - 2009 Racehorse Pass Camping Trip

On July 27, 2009, John Barge and Matt Huffadine headed down to the Racehorse Pass area for a bit of camping and exploring. Here is John's summary of the trip:

Monday: Headed down late and setup camp on Dutch Creek. Explored some of the forestry tracks in the area.

Tuesday: Explored trails in the area. Headed up towards Tornado pass as far as the track was reasonable. Explored the tracks around the Window Lake area. Tried to drive into the abandoned town of Lille but ran into no trespassing signs. Rained most of the day.

Wednesday: Checked out the two tracks across the Oldman river leading to the Livingstone Fire Lookout. The north access (original road) crossing is washed out and would require winching to get up the western side. The south access looks OK. We then drove south and tried to get up the Carbondale River in order to check access to N. Kootenay pass and McDonald Pass. The second creek crossing was badly washed out (there are bridges for the ATVs) and would require winching, so I turned back. I then headed up to the S. Lost Creek valley and made it most of the way to the end before turning around at a wash out. Camp at the last creek crossing. Rained all day again.

Thursday: Ran down the Lost Creek valley and up to Goat Creek and back on trails. Nice and scenic and easy to moderate with little overgrowth. Managed to get some good body damage while daydreaming up the easy trail... Drove out to Beaver Mines Lake and had a swim. Went into Pincher Creek for a night off. Cleared off in the morning, but rained hard in Pincher Creek at night.
