To replace a pump or not to...

Forgive my ignorance but I need some input. Rumor has it that when the thermostat opens up you can see the agitation from the water pump in the coolant. What exactly does that look like? Water boiling in a pot or is it more subtle? My pump looks ok but I wouldn't mind the confirmation.
Thanks for the help.

Hello, from my limited experience if you look down the top of the opening on your radiator the coolant should look like it is flowing gently.  A bit of agitation, but no water fall or rapids  :)
