T-Case, Rear output seal leak

I brought the Defender out of storage yesterday, took it for a drive, and this morning notice a small drip out of the transmission brake drum.

So I assume that I've got a rear output seal leak on the t-case.

Since I had it out on the highway yesterday which would have allowed the t-case to get warmed up, I plan to check the breather first, just to make sure it isn't plugged.

If that's not it I am wondering if simply trying to tighten the main nut on the output shaft can do the trick? (i.e. is that what compresses the rear seal into place?) Or does one have to pull it apart and replace the seal?

Where exactly is it leaking?

A seal leak should coming out of the back side of the backing plate.  There is a leak catcher that diverts the leak out the back.  If it is the seal, it is a simple job.  Undo nut, remove flange, change seal.  Make sure flange sealing surface is okay. Reassemble with new felt sealing washer and new nut.

A leak from the driveshaft connection, is a leak past the nut sealing washer and probably means the nut is loose.  There is a felt washer behind the steel washer, that prevents leakage by the nut. Replace it and the nut.

Thanks for the info John. I'll have to get in there for a closer look because all I can see at this point is a drip out of the bottom of the transmission brake drum, through the small gap between the drum and the brake backplate.

Don't forget to clean up or possibly replace the brake shoes too if they are oil soaked.

Unless you want to experience 'Toyota hand brake syndrome' lol.

I'd replace if that happened.  Normally it does not as the design prevents it unless the drain is plugged.

That brings up one thing...  If you do replace the seal, some oil will come out when you pull the flange.  Be aware so that it does not get all over the shoes.

Good points on the brake shoes. I think I'll plan to replace them while I'm in there.
