Title: Sean Green Memorial Trials 2024
Post by: Gardenome on September 24, 2024, 05:52 PM
It's time! Actually, it's getting a bit late. Options are Lee's place again, bruderheim, or something else. What are people thinking? What is the level of interest?

Bring it on Ian!!!!    Lee is always happy to have us out there as long as you give him a heads up!   And the fall colours are starting to come out....perfect weather.  I'd be happy to help set up too..     October is a great month and even early November is fine...just dress for the weather ;-)

cheers, Bill

Hey gang,  Ian and Dave were out visiting with Lee Shonert to organize the Trials site, so everything is a "GO" now.

We'll let you know the exact date shortly.

In the mean time we are organizing a work party for this Saturday to clear some brush and trees, and maybe start setting some of the course too.  But WE NEED YOUR HELP PLEASE!   If you can spare a few hours or better yet the day it would really help!!!   Like they say ... "many hands make for light work".

If you would like to help please send me a pm with your contact info and we'll let you know the details.

And if there is time we might do a bit of playing while we're there too 😉

Cheers Bill

What a great day to be out in the country!   Beautiful colours,  nice temperatures to work in and lots of chuckles to make the job go quickly😉

Lee had his purpose built series 11a out as well......great to see it back on the trail again too

BIG THANKS TO David Branson, Kevin Clark, Ian Gates and David Lovelock for all the help they provided setting up some new trails and clearing up some of the dreade "pine striping" brush for the more stock vehicles.

From what I understand the SGMT date is tentatively set for Saturday Nov 2nd so mark it down in your calendars 👍👍👍

So....who else's is coming out to play?

For those with stock Landies or newer vehicles there will be several tracks to use without risk to your body panels.  And if you'd like there will be experienced drivers there who can take a passenger seat and help guide u through the gates.

It's a great time for out for the family too!  dress warm and we look forward to seeing u there, putting your trusty Landy through its paces.   By all means being a friend.

Even with the chilly weather and hoarfrost we had a great time out at Lee's place with this years Sean Green Memorial Trial on Saturday.  Dave and Ian set up some great sections that challenged the drivers just enough to make this it a lot of fun.  Ian wasn't able to drive his Series 1 but that doesn't mean it wasn't driven LOL.  The back was loaded up with kids and various drivers rotated through the driver's seat, with Ian riding co-pilot.  And you can't help but be amazed by the agility and capability of that little 60+ year old vehicle, even when loaded to the hilt with tomorrow's LR enthusiasts ;-)

Top dog of the day went to Issac in his 2003/4 Discovery 11.  Matt and son Jason came up from Med Hat in the "mighty Range Rover" classic and "Sam's mum" was over visiting from the south of France just to enjoy the 'balmy weather we were having!?!

Bert and the Sports Car Centre provided the box lunch from Acapella Catering, that we all enjoyed around the campfire by the "Old Cabin". And several of the participants offered up kind words of compliment & appreciation for the land that Lee Shonert allowed us to use.  Spectacular scenery to be playing in!!

There were many pics being taken out there so I'm hoping someone will get them posted soon.

And as for vehicle damage......I think Dave had to only issue I know of, with a bent track rod in the steering, which he claims happened "because it was the only part on the d90 that he DIDN'T paint". LOL  not an issue though.... they quickly pulled it off, bent it straight-ish again, reinstalled and kept going.
True tonka-toy magic!!!

Brilliant day out playing!!!!

cheers, Bill

Lloyd's photos:

They're on facebook, but you should be able to close the login prompt (if you don;t facebook) and view them.

And, here's the blurb I put with the photos:

With a delightfully warm fall and a beautiful Frday ahead of the event things were looking up for a gorgeous day for the annual Alberta Land Rover Enthusiasts (ALRE) Shawn Green Memorial Trials (SGMT) event. Well, the weather gods had other plans and while the group was enjoying a leisurely breakfast in Denny's the snow started to fall. Never to be deterred by a little snow and cool weather, the group assembled in the parking lot and made their way out to the event site.

With five courses setup there was plenty to challenge everyone. However, before anyone challenged a course there was a bit of housekeeping to take care of: sing waivers, build a fire to keep warm by, and receive the obligatory safety orientation.

With that complete it was off to the first course where, one by one, each driver attempted to navigate the course without striking the flags or shunting (basically reversing to realign for a better line through the course).

With two gruelling courses under their belts everyone had worked up a healthy appetite, one that was soon sated by a delicious box lunch from A Cappella Catering and provided courtesy of the Sports Car Centre.

With tummies full there were still three more courses to challenge the intrepid drivers.

As the days was cling to a close all was going well with no real incidents. That is until Dave, driving the last vehicle through the last course managed to hang his truck up on a log and bent the steering linkage on his truck. However, such a breakdown is a small hick-up for a group like this and the team (well, really just Dave) set about removing the linkage and field straightening it, a task where Ian's Series vehicle provided the right anchor by way of the hitch.

As the afternoon waned it was time to tabulate the scores and congratulate the master navigators celebrate their success.

As usual it was an interesting outing filled with fellowship, good cheer, and just a little friendly rivalry.

Hey not sure if this is where I would ask this but I'm wondering if anyone has any more pictures from the sgmt event specifically of my passenger I was in the silver disco. He passed away last weekend and he loved cars so I'm hoping to get a pic of him taking part. He was in a black dress coat but changed into a camo jacket part way through.

Thanks
Isaac

Sorry to hear that Issaac!  By the smile I saw on his face at the end of the day, he looked like he was having a GREAT time ;-)

I've just sent Lloyd a note to ask.......
