Title: Project Freddie
Post by: Apu on July 08, 2024, 06:37 PM
Good day,
Thought i would share what I have been up to for the past 2 years. I've been on the hunt for a Series 2A or 3 for years but always seemed to come up a day late or dollar short. A good friend of mine sent me an ad for a 68 2A for sale. I messaged the seller and turned out he was 3 blocks from my house. I walked over and promptly bought the 68 and a 70 he had in his driveway. The 70 would be the candidate for a rebuild. Once home I tore the rest of it down and rebuilt the bulkhead. From there I completely rebuilt the chassis. It was a mess. The chassis took me 4 months of constant work. After going through all the suspension and driveline components I assembled a roller. From there I purchased a 2005 VW golf with a 1.9L TDI. I drove the Golf home and pulled the engine and all the electronics. I designed an engine adapter and and with the help of some friends machined the crank adapter and release bearing. From there it was a tonne of work getting everything assembled. The front grille was rebuilt with intercooler ducting and a rad mount for a jeep TJ radiator. I moved the turbo to the top of the engine with an intake off a VW AFN, running an Audi intercooler. Nothing seemed to fit so everything had to be built by hand. The ECU needed to be completely deleted and reprogramed with a 140 horse stage one tune. To reduce the chance of blowwing the gear box up I limited the last 1/4 of throttle movement. The body was in decent shape. Some one stripped all the paint off and I thought it was cool. The front wings were beat and I used older style wings and grille. At the point its passed an out of provience and on the road going through shake downs. I still need to get the top assembled and installed along with door tops. Everything is new and runs and drives very well.
