In
2008, our Land Rover and I entered our first off-roading event with
the ALRE. It was a long trek from Calgary to the off-road park near
Sherwood Park so it required frequent stops for a cuppa joe along the
way. In all it took nearly 8 hours each way at a leisurely Land Rover
pace via the backroads of central Alberta. The complete restoration
is still not quite finished. The front doors need to be repaired and
the roof repainted in the correct Limestone colour. However, a new headlining
was made on Wendy's sewing machine for the full roof, a brand new just-out-of-the-box
Fairey overdrive was fitted, and a Bates style tow hitch fabricated.
These
days our old Land Rover drags harrows over our hay field, plows snow
from the driveway, hauls garbage to the dump and still tries to look
pretty. And it still sports its Territory of Papua New Guinea licence
plate as a reminder of "the good old days".
Thanks Fred for
a wonderful write-up. Keep us updated on the progress of your Landy.
