One vehicle I saw a few months ago was a write off as well. A 2017 GMC 1500, it hit a pickup at low speeds that had run a stop sign. Other driver was at fault. The GMC had a bent/broken grill, both headlights gone, bumper pushed in, both fenders, hood pushed in. Minor damage really. No apparant frame or drivetrain damage. Airbags not deployed. Looks repairable.

$27K in repair costs. Vehicle written off. Lots of new bodyshop parts and pieces and labour. Would it actually cost a person that to rebuild it when an organ donor came around? No, but that isn't what modern body shops and insurance are about. I do know of some guys that have spent $20k on paint alone on classic rebuilds nowdays.

The days of reasonable bodyshop rates do appear to be behind us.
