Title: Coil Relocation Kit in Disco 11
Post by: binch on July 01, 2024, 01:58 AM
Greetings all,

Our 2001 Disco 11 (4lt) has just turned over 450K km this weekend.  And we are at the stage where you begin to wonder if it is worth it to put money into it when things started to "go askew on the treddle".

For the past couple of years we've been dealing with a rough running engine which ran like a bag of bones on start up.  Once warmed up it would settle a bit but not completely.  Last year we found it to be one of the coil packs had given up the ghost and we sourced a "good used one".   That lasted for a few month before going back to the bag of bones issue.   All the trouble seemed to be associated to the old coil packs, their location at the back of the engine, against the firewall.   So we decided one last attempt.   Let's install two new coil packs, new tension leads and relocated the coil packs to a cooler location on the engine.

Having done a bit of googling I decided to get a coil pack relocation kit that would move the coils to the top of the engine (above the intake manifold).  I took it to the Sport Car Centre and asked Wayne to install unplug the two wire harness connections from the two existing coils, abandon the old coils and HT leads, and install the new coil paks (with their new bracket) and new HT leads as per instructions.   We could have recovered the old bracket but then we'd have to remove the manifold et al and that would have been more money then it was worth.   The process wasn't without the odd bit of finagling but it went in an without too much issue.

The end result is the engine now purrs like a kitten an my mileage has gone from 400-450km per/ tank up to 550km to 600km per tank of fuel again, much like it did in it's early days.   So I have to say I'm very impressed by the out come....only with I did this at 300k km.

What I need was:

-Relocation kit including bracket, hardware, 2 coil pak harness extensions & silicon pad($100+/-)
-2 sets of HT leads (cylinder 7 & 8 need longer leads then normal) ($40)
-2 new coil paks ($50)

The added bonus of this was....both the coils and the HT leads can easily be replaced in the future given their easy access now.

3x Thumbs up on this one.    If you are considering trying this yourself send me a note and I'll give you the specifics.

cheers, Bill

Hi Bill
I am interested in this, mine is only getting 300 km per tank and is definitely running a bit rough.

thanks for posting this.

Done this a few times. Great upgrade.
I have no idea why the engineers saw fit to hide the coil packs back there?
