This is a placeholder for Moab in 2016, these dates are not firm.
If there is interest I will lead another run down to Moab in September of 2016. Its good to start planning and booking rooms well in advance, so I will send an email out to the group in August or September to see if there is any interest. I wanted to get this on the calendar early so folks could have a bit of time to think about it before the invite goes out.
Whether or not we try to link up with the Land Rover National Rally again can be sorted out at that time. There's pro's and cons either way.
Put me in as a "maybe" Trevor. I'd love to go back and take the missus with me. Need to come with a plan for the pesky kids though. They are in school in September.
oh how you tease...... >:(
I'm going to have to think about this one....it is REALLY tempting I'll tell you that!!!! But please keep me in the loop for now. That was such a great trip too!!! And the next one may include the overnighter in the outback....tres kool!

Yessir, I would include an overnight of camping on this one if there is interest.
I did that a year or two ago and it was great. I know of an absolutely fantastic spot to camp that is out of the way. We would run the Lockheart Basin trail which is a full day trail, and camp overnight near the end of it. The trail comes out close to Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, which has a great trail on it called Elephant Hill. So we run that the next day then head back to Moab when we're done. Makes for a really fun little outing, and some nice desert camping mixed in.
I enjoyed the last one and would love to do this one. By that time, I will be free. Kids done schools and am gearing for a nice long long walk about. This trip would be a good start.
Now that's sounds like a good one Trevor. Night sky in the desert, no sound but the crackle of the fire and coyotes.....that would be a great trip indeed ;)
Time to reinvigorate this event.
Can I see a show of hands for those interested in Moab, 2016. The trip dates are not set in stone yet, however here is a rough outline:
Trip Length: 10 - 14 days total
Dates: Late Sept/Early Oct
Accommodations: We will likely stay at Morris' Last Resort again. Will depend upon headcount. Everyone will be responsible for reserving their own accommodation once we decide the where/when bit.
Trails: We will run a range of them. Again, it will largely depend upon who is coming, but we will for sure do some strictly scenic trails all the way up to some of the harder trails, but with bypasses available (Hell's Revenge is a good example). If there is interest, we can also try some of the more difficult trails should folks want a bit more of a challenge.
Camping: If we have the time I would like to run the Lockhart Basin/Elephant Hill combo and do an overnight camp. I know of a great spot to camp in the desert on Lockhart Basin. Makes for a really fun couple of days.
Land Rover National Rally: I am not planning on linking up with the LRNR this time. If it happens out of coincidence we can decide to join in, or not.
I will form an email list once we get a shortlist of people assembled. I would like to keep the bulk planning related milestones in this thread so it is easy for folks to find, but there will invariably be stuff that is better handled via email.
as always i am interested need to do some kid planning but it would be nice to make the trip this time.
Dave
I am still in. I like the camping idea too. The resort was great last time so nice to be in it again. Keep us posted Trevor.
Cheers
Yup, I'm interested ;)
I would be up for the trip again Trevor, it also gives me an opportunity to do some more fishing on the Yellowstone river and in Montana
I've had a few questions in email that I thought warranted a post here, as more are likely wondering the same thing.
Trip duration: -- I have 10 - 14 days here, which includes driving. I expect to be in Moab for 10 days total, with 2 days driving on either end. However, that does not mean you have to be there for the entire time. Folks can come and go as it fits their schedules.
Drive time to Moab: -- its about a 22 hour drive if you are going the speed limit (75 mph average), depending upon the traffic through Salt Lake City. I typically do it over 2 days, but you can stretch it to 3 if you like, or do it in one day too (I've done that several times as well). All depends on what you prefer. Starting the reservations on the Sunday is intentional as it allows an easy 3 day run down for folks leaving Friday after work, if that is what they prefer. And it takes you through Salt Lake on the Sunday, which is much better for traffic.
It really helps if you have a vehicle GPS. Road signs and exits can be very confusing.
As well, hotel locations for night stops are better planned in advance just that you don't end up sleeping in the oldest part of town in the only creepy motel. The five star hotels where two exits after that.
I've got the list started for those interested in this trip. I'll get an email out to the potential participants shortly to start nailing down dates. Once we get those confirmed I will post them here.
Our dates are set:
Sept 25 --> Oct 4
We have 4 vehicles attending this year:
-- Kerwin and family
-- Norm and Jonathan
-- Jeffrey
-- Trevor
We are booked at Morris' Last Resort again.
Quick update to participants, I'll be sending out an email soon to coordinate an informal gathering for this trip. There's a few small things I want to cover off that are easier to do if folks are all together, such as; convoy planning for the trip down, trail preference discussion and trail schedule, days we'll do our overnight desert camping, and then cover off any other questions folks might have.
We have a pre-trip planning meeting scheduled for my house, July 14 @ 7:30 PM.
Trip plaqnning meeting is complete and the crew is ready to go. We've got another vehicle added, a friend of mine Mark and his '09 Xterra.
It's going to be a great time, looking forward to it!
you kids are going to have a great time! I'm going to miss the camp out in the desert!!!
Yes, I'm very jealous. Hopefully this won't be the last time out to off road Disneyland for the club.
I'm sure we'll be back.....Trevor Bubba is a rocking junkie! ;D
Yessir!
As long as Obama doesn't shut us down at the end of this year, I'll keep returning to my Mecca.
Welp, the troops are making their final preparations, only a couple weeks to go before we depart for Moab 2016. Looking forward to a great trip, excellent company, and some epic trails. We've got 4 vehicles going, so a nice manageable group. The overnight camping will be a lot of fun as well...it's a different experience camping out in the desert, not quite what we are used to up here.
I'm getting a stronger sense that this will be the last trip as I'm pretty sure Obama is going to shut it down for good. So we will make this a good one!
;D I'm generally a pessimist at heart but I'm keeping an open mind on the future for the area ;)
But I had to laugh as your last note reminded my of something Oddball said in Kelly's Heros..... Laughed, and laughed, and laughed.....
Oddball = best tank commander evah! ;D
That's a good one Bill. Lol
Moab is getting shut down?
Justin Trudeau will get some work done one day?
The new Jeep Wrangler will have no longer have beam axles?
An all new Defender will arrive within my lifetime?
All questions that cannot be answered.
Have a great time in Moab guys. "Party (or wheel in your case) like it's 1999".
We're getting set to head home tomorrow. The trip was a lot of fun, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Lots of great trails run, a night of desert camping after a long day on the trails, and many an evening sitting around having a few drinks and exchanging stories after a good meal.
Good times all around.
I didn't take any pictures, but others were clicking away vigorously so we might see something posted after we return to town.
Excellent!!! Looking forward to hearing all about it folks!! ;)
Jeffrey's video of the trip: https://youtu.be/gqFw3os_qe0 (https://youtu.be/gqFw3os_qe0)
Looked like a great trip! Campsite looked pretty compfy too! :D
Great video Jeffrey! Lots of great videos and pictures there!
Great looking trip there lads. The desert camping must have been a really amazing experience?
I NEED to get back there some day soon.
Nice video Jeffery. Good trails challenges. Brings back memories. The desert camping looked great.
How was the heat?
The camping was a lot of fun. I really like that spot, it's great. The heat wasn't an issue at all Emad as we got to the campsite in the late afternoon and as it is in a canyon, the sun is already behind the rocks. We roll out of there by 9ish the next morning so you never are sitting around in the mid-day heat. Temperatures were very comfortable for the camping.
Matt, I had some conversations with a few locals (vendors mostly) that have been very involved in the entire Greater Canyonlands expansion that has threatened to shut down the area. Overall their feedback was very positive. I had a very long chat with the owner of Moab 4x4 (Steve) who's been quite active in this and learned the following:
-- The expanded area will include a small portion of trails...from Hurrah Pass over. This area will include Lockhart Basin where we camped, so this year's campsite will likely be the last as offsite camping will be verboten
-- For those affected trails, vehicles will still be allowed to use them and the BLM will continue to manage the existing trails
-- The bill was re-jigged to be much more focused as anti-oil & gas legislation, rather than the more sweeping approach originally taken. Accordingly they appear to be allowing land use to continue for recreational purposes, including motorized recreation
-- It is expected to be signed in by Obama
Overall his feedback to me was not dire at all. He didn't see his business as under threat anymore by the pending legislation, and thinks that in its current form the bill will not be that bad.
Where you do see a lot of resistance is still on the general land grab by the government. A lot of residents are very much against that because the vast majority of the land in their county is state owned (like 96% range) and jobs are needed in the area. Oil and gas development was one of the up and coming job creators, and that looks like it will be squashed.
We will know for sure in a few months when Obama starts issuing his pardons and signing in his last rounds of bills.
That's very encouraging news.
