I'm surprised to hear the front and rear wheels don't travel in the same tracks... ???

I think the 70 series have always been that way. I don't believe that carried over to the 80 series though.

Lots of NA pickups do the same. Often the front axle has wider track than the rear. Helps with stability and tracking apparently.
