Hello Gents! I see a lot of the same names on here, some new.
I've got a nice S 2a which hasn't been driven much since it was redone, and right now I'm out on a one week fishing trip. Staying at a Motel. Great until Growler decided it didn't want to shift into 3rd or 4th any more. It would be a long drive home.
The Event was really a non-event. I had pulled over to have a look the threatening skies, no noise, no nothing. When I went to get going again, it slid over into the track for 3rd/4th, but just does not go up or down. The tranny was rebuilt by Malcolm about 7,000 miles ago. Yes, I checked and it is full of oil. A bit over-full, actually. Once in a blue moon it would resist going into 3rd gear, but I think I would just double-clutch and it would go. Not-so this time.
I think I basically have to open it up, which means a lot of preliminary work. I don't really want to do it - start there - but I could. Any ideas for a quick fix so I don't have to get it towed home? Anyone have a transmission? I'd rather fix this one, but looking for options too.
Help!! Mostly just praying for some idea which will allow me to drive home.
I'd first look at the shift rail. If you are lucky something came loose.

Hi, thanks John. Yeah. I hope so too. It was popping out of third as well, which might have just been a weak spring, as it was doing that before I rebuilt it. I can't really imagine what would make it stick, but I suppose a ball could have broken, or...?? I agree, it would be nice to just take a look; could be anything.
I have that great one-piece floor mat, but just starting to have a look by getting that out is quite a bit of work. It is screwed-down through the seat frames and a few other places. If I did take it out, it has been 10 years, can I get access to the cover plate without pulling out the seats and floor? I can't remember much, but looking at the manual some things are starting to come back.
You may need to remove the whole floor to get the top cover off the gear box. I can't recall. I would take the gaiter and shifter off first and you should be able to tell. Someone with a Series at hand could probably tell you better than me.

Yes, the whole floor had to go. It is all out now and I got some feedback on Guns and Rovers about a synchro spring. Talked to Malcolm and he said the same thing. Nothing else seems awry. I'll take the cover off tomorrow, see what I can see, John, but I think I did my best. There are some interlocks in there I should look at in case some thing is jammed-up, but the sychro spring is a known "thing."

drain the oil into a pan with cup under the stream of oil that comes out of the drain plug, if spare parts come out it may be more than a spring or a detent

Easy enough, I'll do that. If I don't find anything broken, there is hope.
Has anyone ever taken the lid off of that transmission without removing the seats? Sure would be nice.
Hi. Since I'm on here anyway looking for a radiator, I thought I'd post an update. Malcolm said he thought it was some kind of flat springs in the synchro. I have the cab taken apart, pulled the cover off, and with a magnet I fished out three of those springs (broken). So he is coming down to help me do the replacement, after which I'm going to have to put it all back together again. Sigh. He says he has seen it a few times before. Will replace the entire synchro unit.
Thanks again to all those who offered advice when I was stranded out there. It had to be towed home 150kms, but I was satisfied because of your help that there was nothing else I could do.
I don't believe I deserve to be a Series owner anymore - just don't like working on it - so will be putting it up for sale in the States when this is all said and done. I think it is worth close to $US20K, which I could never get for it here. I'll miss Growler, but there's a season for everything, I guess.
Nice try to repair it on the run. Sometimes it's simple and sometimes you have to take the whole bloody thing apart! I lost all drive in my td5 and tried to figure it out on the fly but it definitely ended up needing a tow when later I found out that the input gear on my transfer case was totally stripped. Zip ties didn't fix it ;)

Newbie here. Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but Has anyone tried to upgrade 2006 sport sc ZF 6 gearbox to a ZF8 ? The 6 speed is blown and 8 speed is apparently much more reliable and available.

Hi- well, I seem to have been silent on here. The tow happened, and I am proud to report the Trans is now fixed! Most of you will know how much work that would have been. I procrastinated until the end of the summer, but Malcolm said he would come down and help me tear apart the tranny if I got it out, and there were a few delays. It was September. It turns out it was those flat u-shaped springs in the synchro, and two weekends later, it was back in and running, if but with a few curse-words when I realized the seats were installed with one seatbelt receiver (the Driver's of-course) hanging down between the seat bench and the body! I know.... I had some fairly ameteur help with putting the interior back in, and it happened on my watch.
I was going to sell the damn thing, as my health has not been the greatest, but things have improved, and Growler and I are now friends again. Thanks to Malcolm, and to Ross Mailer for helping me out with a couple of Whitworth bolts which I lost (then found). I had some other pictures, but they seem to be gone.
Always good to see a landy and it's owner back together again ;)

I've been much too busy with other things, but in putting it all together I forgot to put the cover on the tunnel for the 4WD selector. I managed to get that "wonderful" one-piece floor mat up on one side only, but with very little room to muck-around, and as far as I can tell, the only way that spring goes in is on top of the plate and up against the selector knob. Is this correct? Because I don't think I can compress the spring enough. Just in case I am missing something, I thought I would ask - I can find no diagram which says for sure.

Got-it. Someone on Guns and Rovers asked if I had it in Low Range, as the 4wd selector only goes UP in low. I did have it in low, but sho-nuff, when I gave it a stiff yank, up it came another inch or so, and there is lots of room for the spring now.
It always pays to ask when 1+1 does not seem to equal 2
Nice work! Sometime you just need to take a hammer to it to persuade it to do what you want ;)
