Hello - as requested, this is a place for discussion of the event above.
I am hosting at my parent's place, which is 15 or so miles South of Rocky Mountain House, or coming from the other direction, 3 or 4 miles on the gravel road going West from the Cow Lake Store. I'll post a link to the spot.
Others who have expressed an interest are interested in fishing and 4-wheeling. I can suggest lots of fishing spots, someone-else can lead the off-roaders.
There is no power or water at this place, but lots of room to park 6 or 8 RV's, a central campfire spot and an outhouse. Dogs and kids are welcome. There are no other houses within 1/2 mile, lots of trees, trails and a good view to the East. I'll attach a few pics taken there.
Any questions, post them here, or PM me.
Jim
Am planning on coming out. Which day is it in June?
Sounds good to me!
Hi - I'm proposing the weekend of June 11th.
You can see there is a covered area and picnic tables next to the firepit. Luxury!
Good to hear there are some takers.
I'll try and make the March trip, so can show the place then too. Or camp if you like.
I am very interested in this trip as well
Hi. The camping spot is near the intersection of Twp Rd 390 and RR 84a. PM me for exact details - I posted them earlier, but Bill noted this was in the public domain....
Jim
Do is this trip still going ahead for June 11?
Hi - Okay, let's try this again for June 9th, 2017. Details above.
If the weather is good and anyone wants to come out in April or May, I might be there. Otherwise, I can give you directions, you can hop the fence to have a look.
If you do not know of Stauffer Creek/the North Raven River, you should look it up. The average size fish there had been dropping, but is still about 19" in the lower sections. Here are a few pics.
FYI, there is another event planned for June 10. http://alre.club/Forum/index.php?topic=807.0
I'll up for camping and fishing. Have to break out the fly tying kit.
Okay, so the date is crowded - crap. I'm not sure what to do as Biology has set the date. If there are people out there who would like to come on that weekend but really want to do the British Meet, post on here. If you will be coming anyway, let's hear from you too (thanks John). I was thinking another 2-5 vehicles is lots, which shouldn't diminish the showing at the British Field Meet too much.
For those who wish, we could plan another another time as well! Two weeks later is the other big hatch on Stauffer, and there may be Stonies coming up elsewhere about that time too. My preference is to watch the weather and plan around that - not necessarily weekends either.
I'm open to other times, but will be out for that weekend anyway - weather-permitting of course. Stauffer is spring-fed, so does not mud-up as quickly or for as long as most Eastern Slope streams.
Spin fishermen welcome as well - I use both, and am better at spinning than on the fly.
Oh, and as posted elsewhere, sorry for dropping the ball last year. Major trauma rebuilding the engine on the Rover and I was too embarassed to even poke my head up and say "Sorry."
Growler is running great now, let's go fishin'!
Jim
I forgot about the British Field meet as well. I should plan to attend that as I missed the last couple years.
One other option is to just pick a weekend in July/Aug (perhaps as part of the trip planning meeting), and have a camping/fishing/wheeling weekend at that time instead. The great thing about the location of your property is that there are A LOT of options in the general area for things to do in a Land Rover. North Ram is but one option.
My two bits anywhoo.
Thanks Trevor.
My work does not revolve around weekends like most folks. For now, I'll leave it the weekend of the 9th of June and another date can be TBA. Depending on the weather, I should be there the 6th or 7th.
Come Spring, I can post on here when I'm heading-out for my 3/4-day trips, and others can pop out for a day or so. Depending upon when the ice is out on Stauffer, I am usually out there early to mid-April.
Another one from last year.
Average size, above average colour though!
Nice brown!
Note the spinning-rod. He was full of black beetles, so probably thought my black panther martin was one.
I do eat the odd one.
Hi. With a bunch of fine weather in the forecast, I'll be heading out to Rocky mid-April or so if anybody wants to join. Stauffer will be open before anything else, as it is spring-fed (warmer). Usually a little cloudy, but very fishable. Last year I caught a small black stonefly hatch and did quite well - 3 fish and a few more takes in a few hours.
Keep me posted on what weekend you decide on Jim. I'm pretty tight on time then as I'll be doing vehicle prep for my Moab trip at the start of May and I'm not going to have a lot of extra cycles. However, if I can fit in a day trip I'd sure like to head out there for some fishing!
Okay Trevor.
It won`t be the only chance.
I may go this weekend, but have a sprained calf muscle, so won't be doing much walking. The lower sections will still be frozen over (I think), but if you are interested in a little fishin' and a tour of the property let me know.
Hi. I may be headed out to Rocky the last wknd of April. Still c-c-c-c-old at nights.
Jim
Won't be able to make that weekend. I'm off to Moab the morning of the 29th for a couple weeks.
Will be out fishing at Cow Lake/Rocky this weekend if anyone wants to stop-by.
Jim
Hi. Weather-permitting, this is still on. It it is nice on the wknd of the 1st, I will be out then as well.
Jim
The forecast is for some rain the first week in June, but I should be out there the 6th through the weekend.
ok. I'm keeping an eye on the forecasts as well. I'd like to get out there if I can, but likely will not make the run if its really wet.
If you make it out let me know how you did? I'm watching from afar ;)
My Rainbow trout fishing has improved this season. Got my limit couple of weeks ago at Beaumont Pond. So, planning on more fishing this summer.
PS: I am going to PEI for two weeks. I may venture after the Blue Fin Tuna if I can scrub some mola together for an ocean fishing excursion. Otherwise, I will cast from the shore and hope for best.
Cheers
meet half way and go jigging for makre ;Dl or cod
bah, I've been thwarted for this coming weekend and won't be heading out. Life too often gets in the way of fun!
That`s too bad Trevor. If the weather is good between the 15th and 20th, the Green Drakes will be hatching, and they hatch ALL day.
My buddy out in Caroline caught a 22 incher under the bridge on 761 Monday night....
But no pic, I`ll have a few though.
Jim
jim, et al,
if you are still hosting, my two little kids and i will come down. we camp well and fish poorly. as the rover is still minus brakes, the trip will be in the toyota. the weather isn't looking good, so we are packing for being wet, but if it's dramatically bad we might depart early.
we'd be arriving friday night. i'll ping you via email to confirm directions etc.
Chris
Well, the weather certainly turned bad. And just in time to thwart The Hatch! The cold weather and lower water temperatures will keep them down for awhile.
Luckily, many and some good fish were had regardless! I can't find my computer cable, but will post a few pics.
Oh - here we go!
Wow, attached a bunch but only got one. Anyway, that is the upper range of the normal size of fish you get down there. He was just a shade under 5 pounds, but the only fish of the night. My buddy Dan caught one even bigger one though; he had gone back to the truck and this monster was feeding just below the bridge on the very first Brown Drakes which were hatching. Nearly broke his rod, as he was bent-over the bridge trying to play the fish, which was in very short-order about 40 yards upstream.
Trevor - et al, I will wait for reports on whether the Brown Drakes hold-off hatching until the weekend and if they do, I'll be there. After that is the Green Drake hatch on the same creek, which is VERY worthwhile.
This is a very nice size fish. Good catch. Are you fly fishing or doing cast and reel?
I am tempted now.
I caught that one on a nymph, but on Sunday night in a light rain I got three on a Panther Martin.
The weather does not look that great for the weekend, but I'm pretty sure we are going to drive up there for a look. Cooler weather could be just perfect.
Hi. Well, we went up there and the Green Drakes were around, but we saw only a few hatching and/or laying eggs, so the fish were not feeding.
I was training the GF so didn't fish much myself and we got skunked.
The Drake hatch is called the Duffers' Fortnight in the UK - because it is the easiest time to catch fish. On Stauffer, it is not so easy at the best of times, but that will be it for the good fishing there for the year, except for maybe hoppers in August.
A few of us are planning a week long trip, possibly around July 1st. As anyone knows who fishes around that area knows, there are lots of other places to fish, especially with a 4wd. I'll keep you posted.
Attached is a pic from the same night as the one above. The stream is about 15ft wide at that point (but they don't seem to care).
Lol, that's a monster!
I'll be out again this wknd. If anyone is in the area, I'll be checking emails in between chores, swimming and fishing.
