Title: Rebuild D II steering box
Post by: ochubb on April 10, 2017, 09:36 AM
Has only one rebuild a DII steering box?  Mine is leaking a fair bit and needs attention.

I've viewed some generic steering box rebuilds and a promo videos for ICS Steering Specialists https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wjwB0AMCvk

The generic vids of backyard mechanics make it look challenging but by no means impossible. Of course the ICS video doesn't get into the gory details but the LR steering box does look a lot different than your generic GM, Ford, etc

Thoughts?

If it's the output shaft that's leaking make sure it's not rusted and pitted.....both quite common and unrepairable. :(

I am having similar problem on my Black Disco 2 2001 unit.  Did not have a chance to investigate it yet though. There is a rebuilt kit for it. Some YouTube I checked for LR was not impossible to deal with. Needs time though. Sounds like time for a home clinic.

Just don't let you pwr strg systems run dry.....the bill goes way up then!!!!

Rebuilt steering boxes are under 500 quid last I looked and come with a two year warranty.  Option 2

When the weather improves I'm going to have a closer look to make sure it isn't a leaking hose.

Assuming its the box that's leaking, I'll probably pickup the one I found at a wrecker for $200, order the rebuild kit and give it a go, just cause.
