Title: 4.0l oil leak
Post by: pechanec on June 22, 2018, 08:39 AM
Currently trouble shooting a particularly annoying oil leak on our D2. Seems to be coming from the upper back of the engine, leaking down past the starter(some down the driver's side also) and blowing onto the catalytic(s) which makes a fair bit of smoke!  Anyone run into this scenario with their 4 L?

Valley gasket would be my first guess. Closely followed by the valve covers.

Thanks. I was leaning towards the valve covers. I'll check the valley

It's quite common for a valve cover gasket to fail at the rear of the engine first.

So it's off with the intake then !

have a look at Nord-Lock washers, they will help stop the bolts coming loose, the new type rubber gasket with spacers is good, but the bolts will work loose.

Thanks for all your help! We Just finished weekend surgery on the D2. Replaced rocker cover gaskets- hard as hockey pucks and loose bolts too. Couldn't lay hands on nord-locks quickly enough, so I settled on locktite. Replaced valley gasket, seals and clamps- rear seal had fallen off and was laying on the back of the block!  Looks like someone had made a rather sloppy go of top-end work sometime before we bought it.
