Title: LT77 for parts, H or G suffix only.
Post by: ugly_90 on September 26, 2016, 07:33 PM
Looking for a Defender LT77 wreck for projects Bruce and I are working on. Must not be siezed or ran without fluid.

Must be H or G suffix only. Discovery LT77 may also do.

Isn't the lt77 for a disco going to be an 'S' suffix...? ???

Sure. A Discovery LT77-S may work also. I think the supply on those is quite tight here, but I would examine one as an organ donor. I have an LT77 E, which won't do.

No.  The LT77S is an "H" suffix.  Keep in mind a "G" and an "H" will have quite different gearing.  It is best to know about that as it will affect what you may want.

Here for an explanation of the suffixes: http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/manual-gearboxes/lt77.html
QuoteThe LT77 was introduced to the Landrover range in approx 1983 with the suffix 'D' box and was developed over the years to the suffix 'H' which was last used in 1994.
The 'D' and 'E' are very similar the only difference being the reverse gear was a little fatter in the E,
When they went from 'E' to 'F' larger layshaft bearings were used.
The 'G' was further improved by all the gear teeth including the pinion getting approx 20% thicker. Also a much wider pump was used to increase the lubrication and cope with the fact that some of the LT77's were now being supplied oil cooled, ie V8 NAS 90, 3.9 RR Classic and the 3.5 EFI Discos.
The 'H' (termed the LT 77S) was the same as the 'G' in terms of strength but used a different synchro set up called the'Double Synchro', In reality it didn't work much better.

As far as gearing.

A "G" will be an LT77.  For diesels there are two possible gear ratio setups based on the prefix.
51A: 3.985, 2.519, 1.5074, 1.00, 0.8314, R3.701
50A: 3.585, 2.301, 1.5074, 1.00, 0.8314, R3.701

An "H" means that it is an LT77S.  For the diesel versions, the gearing is the same for Disco and Defender.  Bellhousing length and shifter location is different between the two.
55A (Disco), 56A (Defender): 3.692, 2.132, 1.397, 1.00, 0.77, R3.429

Yup, lots of info. No candidates for a Late LT77 scrap gearbox here then? Nothing getting dusty on a shelf somewhere? I have some other leads I'll try.

I've got an unused Ashcroft LT77G 51A in the garage that is a spare for my 90. It could be for sale if needed at replacement cost.

Thanks Andrew. I think I have another lead worked out on a late LT77 gearbox.
